NIAGARA FALLS, NY (April 12th, 2024) – Niagara erupted for five runs to open the game, coupling it with a seven run sixth inning to take command of the game. The Mount fell in this afternoon's contest, 16-8.
Niagara opened the bottom of the first inning with five runs on four hits putting the Mount in a tough position very early in the game.
After wearing a punch to the gut, Mount St. Mary's fought back to tie the game in the fourth inning. Two runs started it in the second inning after a leadoff single by
Jayson Kramer, later scoring on a
David Stirpe RBI single to right field.
Shane Wockley batted Stirpe in to cut the deficit to three runs.
Brendan Yagesh allowed just two hits and zero runs in the next two frames putting the Mount in position for an opportunity at the plate. With two outs, the Mount rallied for three runs after
Evan Smith singled a bunt to second base and stole second to put himself in scoring position.
JT Landwehr wore yet another pitch, number 20 on the season, putting runners on first and second.
Scott Seeker followed with a two RBI triple down the left field line, bringing them within a run. Next up
Tyler Long answered the call with an RBI double down the right field line to knot it, 5-5.
The Purple Eagles held the Mount to no runs for the next four innings, while scoring nine of their own to go ahead, 16-5.
Two walks to start the ninth gave the Mountaineers optimism for some late magic.
Stephen Katch scored on a booted ball from the third baseman, followed by an
Aiden Tierney RBI single to short stop, scoring
Gavin Lacoe, while Stirpe was able to score on a throwing error by the short stop, 16-8. The rally ended on a ground out, losing the first of a three-game series.
