EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 5, 2024) – Overtime once again was not friendly to the Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team as Binghamton rallied to score the winner in a 13-12 final at Waldron Family Stadium.
Defensive heroics were a big factor in helping the Mount force the extra session.
Ben Ward set career highs for both ground balls and caused turnovers, scooping the ball five times, and earning four takeaways.
Mitchell Dunham forced two caused turnovers with four ground balls.
Owen Peters finished the contest with 12 saves.
On the offensive side of the game,
Brody Atkinson led the charge with four goals and an assist.
Cormac Giblin contributed his customary two goals. Six more members of the team found the back of the net once.
The teams battled to a 2-2 tie in the first quarter.
Will McKay and
Ian Plott contributed goals for the Mountaineers. After a 3-0 Bearcats run opened the second period, Mount responded with a 5-0 run with each goal scored by a different member of the team.
Nathanael Merchant got it started followed by the first career goal for
Gavin Schaffer.
Ben Schuster, Atkinson, and Giblin rounded it out. A late Binghamton score stopped the run for a 7-6 game at halftime.
Atkinson gave the Mount its largest lead with two more successful shots, including one shorthanded. Binghamton answered again to tie, but the final tally of the quarter came when
Brian Bradley passed one off to brother
Dan Bradley, who scored the go-ahead shot. The fourth quarter began when Atkinson scored again to put the Mount up 11-9. Once again, the Bearcats responded for the tie.
With 2:57 remaining, Giblin had his second to give the Mountaineers a 12-11 advantage. Defense forced a turnover but when Binghamton got a second opportunity with seconds left, they capitalized with a goal from Matthew Keegan to send the game to overtime. Mount St. Mary's had two chances in the extra session, but Liam Ferris played the hero for the Bearcats in the sudden victory.
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play begins Sunday, March 10 at Manhattan.
