Season High for Goals Holds Up as Mount Women’s Lacrosse Fends Off Quinnipiac

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 30, 2024) – Needing a season high for goals to achieve victory on Saturday, Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse rose to the occasion. Scoring 16 times, they fended off a late comeback from the Quinnipiac Bobcats to take the game by a 16-15 final.

Mackenzi Furlong and Anna Salerno led the offensive initiatives, scoring 11 between them. Furlong was the leader for the Mount, tying a game-high for goals with seven. MK Allingham earned her first multi-goal game as a collegiate player, and Logan Cook dented the twine twice as well. Hailey Chester won 11 of the team's 16 draw controls. On defense, Mackey Fick added three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.

Quinnipiac's EllaGrace Delmond matched Furlong in goals and assisted twice for nine points.

Mount St. Mary's picked up their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win and are now 3-7 (1-2 MAAC) this year. Quinnipiac is 1-8 (0-3 MAAC) after the loss.

The Mountaineers built a 10-5 lead in the first half. Four different players helped the visitors jump out to a 4-1 advantage early, and the Mount repeated the feat to close out the opening 30 minutes. Furlong had five goals by the break, and Salerno cleared the hat trick bar as well to provide offense.

Quinnipiac responded with an early second half charge to close the gap to 11-8. MK Allingham and Salerno answered with goals to drive the lead back up to five. Back and forth the game went into the fourth quarter, with the Bobcats chiseling at the Mount's advantage and the Mountaineers punching back.

With 13:59 remaining, Cook pushed the contest to 15-10 with a goal and Furlong answered on a free position minutes later to make it 16-12. Quinnipiac then surged at the Mount to try and steal the game late, piecing a 3-0 run to close the deficit to 16-15 with 2:50 to go. The next pivotal draw control went to the Mount who wiped two minutes off the clock before turning it over. Two last attempts by the Bobcats to force overtime resulted in a turnover and time expiring as the Mountaineers held on for the win.

Shuffling up to Buffalo next Wednesday (Apr. 3), Mount St. Mary's takes on Canisius.
