Emmitsburg, Md. (March 30, 2024)--A five-run third inning proved to be the difference as Mount St. Mary's lost to Siena, 7-0, on Saturday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on Saturday. The Saints swept the three-game series as the Mountaineers fall to 6-19 overall and 0-5 in the MAAC this year.
Mount St. Mary's starter
Sophia Schmehl cruised through the first two innings by retiring the first six batters she faced with three strikeouts before running into trouble in the third. The Saints started the five-run third with a single down the left field line, and followed with a bunt single to put a pair of runners on base. After a flyout, a Mount error loaded the bases for Isabella Pardo, who singled off Schmehl's glove to bring home the first run. Madi Silber singled home a pair of runs to make it 3-0, and the final two runs scored on wild pitches.
The Mount had leadoff singles in the third and fourth innings, but saw their rallies stopped by grounding into a double play in each frame. Siena added two insurances runs in the seventh to close out the scoring in the game.
Abigayle Perry,
Julia Vincent,
Kassidy Johnson,
Avery Dinges and
Gina Del Giorno each had a hit in the contest for the Mount. Schmehl pitched a complete game, allowing five earned runs while striking out six in seven innings of work.
The Mountaineers are back in action on Tuesday, April 2nd, when Cornell visits Our Lady of the Meadows Field for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
