Mount Softball Suffers Pair of Setbacks to Siena

Emmitsburg, Md. (March 29, 2024)--Mount St. Mary's dropped both ends of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader to visiting Siena at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on Friday.  The Saints rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Mount in the opening game before posting a 6-1 win in game two.  Tori Bowles paced the Mountaineers with three hits on the day.

In the opening game, the Mount (6-18, 0-4 MAAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings of play before the Saints rallied for the 4-3 win.  The Mount scored in the bottom of the first to take the early lead in game one.  Abigayle Perry was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and moved to second on a Julia Vincent sacrifice bunt.  Bowles then singled up the middle to bring home Perry for the first run of the game.  Zoe Truxon was hit by a pitch and Kassidy Johnson walked to load the bases, but the Saints (16-8, 2-0 MAAC) were able to get out of the jam with a flyout to left from Gina Del Giorno.

The Mountaineers added to the lead with two more runs in the bottom of the second.  With two outs and nobody on base, Perry doubles to lead a two-out rally.  Vincent followed with a double of her own to make it 2-0 to chase Siena starter Nicole Pataille.  Bowles then greeted relief pitcher Alissa Eimont with a double of her own, the Mount's third consecutive two-base hit of the inning.  Elizabeth King reached on an error by the shortstop, and Truxon was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Siena was able to escape further damage when Ashley Giampolo snared a Johnson line drive to end the frame.

The Saints started their rally with a pair of runs in the fourth on RBI singles from Giampolo and Emma Peteresen.  A Giampolo sacrifice fly tied the score in the fifth, and Siena took the lead on a Diana Parker RBI groundout in the top of the sixth.  Avery Dinges led off the bottom of the sixth with a base hit and she moved into scoring position by stealing second.  Eimont was able to keep the lead by retired the next three batters on a fly out and a pair of strikeouts.  The Mount had a chance to tie the score in the seventh as well.  King reached first on an error on a dropped pop fly with one out.  Brianna Manni pinch hit and singled to put the tying run on second base.  Eimont, however, retired the final two batters on popouts to end the game.

Bowles went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Mountaineers in the game.  Starting pitcher Olivia Murphy allowed three earned runs in 4.2 innings of work while Sophia Schmehl allowed one run in 2.1 innings of relief.  Eimont earned the win, allowing one runs in 5.1 innings of relief for the Saints.  Petersen went 4-for-4 at the plate to pace Siena's offense.

The Mount took the early lead in game two as well with a run in the bottom of the first.  Perry opened the inning with a base hit, and after a Vincent sacrifice bunt, Bowles double home Perry for the 1-0 Mount lead.  Petersen tied the score in the top of the second with a solo home run.  Siena took the lead with two runs in the fourth on a Petersen RBI single and a Jocelyn Ulrich RBI double.  Siena added three insurance runs in the seventh to secure the 6-1 win.

Johnson led the Mount with a pair of hits in game two while Maddie Coleman tossed a complete game, allowing eight hits while striking out four.  Eimont allowed one run in seven innings to pick up the win for Siena was Petersen went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs and two RBI.  She finished the day 6-for-7 at the plate.
