Mount’s Terrific Third Quarter Matched by Niagara in 14-10 Contest

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 27, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's rose to the challenge and fought back from a 7-1 deficit to tie Wednesday's contest with Niagara entering the fourth quarter. But Niagara managed to score the next six goals en route to a 14-10 win.

Anna Salerno posted her third hat trick of the season and was one of seven scorers for the Mountaineers. MK Allingham earned her first collegiate goal on a free position shot in the third quarter rally. Hailey Chester finished with a multi-goal game by scoring on back-to-back possessions. Lizzie Stevenson recorded a career-high four caused turnovers.

Niagara's Rachel Crane paced the Purple Eagles offense with six goals, and Lexi Braniecki added a hat trick.

Strong defense was the order of the first half. After the Mount went up 1-0, the Purple Eagles pieced together a methodical rally to go up 5-1 as the teams headed to the locker room. The visitors extended the run to 7-1 at the 10:26 mark of the third quarter.

Mount's comeback commenced three minutes later with Logan Cook scoring. Chester's two tallies and a Salerno strike pushed it to 7-5 with 4:16 left in the third, prompting a brief goalie switch. Allingham and Mackenzi Furlong finished the rally to level the game as the contest entered the fourth. Crane and Salerno traded goals before Niagara went on their rally of six to clinch the victory. Anna McQuay added a goal and Salerno secured her hat trick as the seconds ticked down.

The Mountaineers head to the Nutmeg State to battle Quinnipiac on Saturday, March 30.
