WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (March 2, 2024) – For the second straight year, Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse battled the Monmouth Hawks into overtime. It took six periods of play, but Monmouth managed to convert a game winner to take a 13-12 victory.
Will McKay secured his first collegiate hat trick by leading Mount St. Mary's with four goals.
Cormac Giblin and
Brody Atkinson were multi-goal scorers, with Giblin continuing his streak of two scores every game this season. The defense tied a season high in caused turnovers, forcing 14 Hawks giveaways.
Jackson Phillips led the way with five CT's.
Owen Peters finished the game with 10 saves.
The Hawks got a hat trick from Brendan Dundas and five multi-goal contributors.
Mount's offense started red hot with three goals in the first three minutes.
Ethan Holobinko lit the spark by winning the opening faceoff and blazing down field to score 19 seconds in. McKay and Giblin followed suit and the Mountaineers were off and running. Strong defense did its part with five caused turnovers as Monmouth was unable to register a shot on goal and were shut out for the first 15 minutes. The Hawks found the back of the net three times in the second, but goals by
Ian Plott and McKay gave the Mount a 6-3 halftime advantage.
Monmouth began to close the gap after Giblin got the first goal of the second half. The Hawks hit a 3-0 run, and after
Noah Persing scored to put the visitors up 8-6, Monmouth scored twice to tie the game. McKay secured the hat trick in the fourth to put the Mount up 10-9, and Atkinson added a tally at the 11-10 mark. The Hawks registered a pair to go up and force the Mountaineers to answer. Atkinson delivered on a pass from McKay to send the contest to overtime.
No team scored in the first session, but two minutes into double overtime, Connor Macrae connected on the game-winner for the Hawks.
On Tuesday, March 5, Mount St. Mary's welcomes Binghamton to Waldron Family Stadium. First face-off is slated for 4 p.m.
