Mountaineers Serve up a Ninth Inning Special to Close Out Coppin

Hanover, Md. (March 19th, 2024) – Mount baseball won tonight's marathon match over the Coppin State Eagles, 17-16. After conceding nine runs in the bottom of the sixth, Leoni and crew took it to the bats as the Mountaineers rattled off seven runs in the last three innings, while leaving the Eagles scoreless.

Cam King earns his first win of the season after pitching out the eighth inning, allowing one hit while tallying a strikeout. Maximus McCrary records his first save of the season after throwing a three up, three down inning with a strikeout in the bottom of the ninth.

The game was action-packed from start to finish, as the Mount led 8-7 through the third inning. Tyler Long added three runs in the top of third after knocking a three-run shot out of the park scoring Josh Braxton and JT Landwehr.

A quiet fourth inning led to a two-run top of the fifth for the Mount. Ty Stecko, 2-4 at the plate today, hit a two RBI single to left field, scoring Long and Braxton to extend their lead to three, 10-7.

A busy bottom of the sixth as the Eagles rattled nine runs off of six hits, including a three run home-run to start the rally, 16-10.

The Mount took command of the game in the seventh inning, starting with four runs to cut the deficit, 16-14. Two hit batters and a Nick Fleming three RBI double down the right field line sparked the team's comeback hopes, scoring Stecko, Scott Seeker, and Long.

The pitching staff comprised of TJ Curley, King, and McCrary allowed one hit while holding the Eagles scoreless the rest of the game.

Heading into the top of the ninth down two runs, the Mount sparked the offense once again, this time with two outs. Jayson Kramer, Evan Smith, and Efrain Correa, Jr. loaded the basepath. A passed ball brought the Mountaineers within a run, leading to a Braxton walk, a Long hit by pitch, and Seeker drawn walk, scoring the next two runs, and reclaiming the lead, 17-16.

McCrary iced the game in the bottom of the ninth, striking out the lead-off batter, and forcing ground outs of the next two to win the game.
