Sheerin Throws Complete Game in Win Over St. Bonaventure; Mountaineers Split the Day

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 16th, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's splits today's double-header with a win in game one, 3-2, and a loss in extra-innings in game two, 8-6. Deven Sheerin highlighted the day with a near no-hitter in the first game while fanning eight batters through seven innings, while grabbing his first win of his collegiate career.
 
GAME ONE:
 
The first game was a battle of pitchers as both teams allowed their starting pitcher to close the game. The Mount finished with three runs on four hits, and an error.
 
Ty Fredo opened it up in the bottom of the second with a two-run moonshot over the left field fence, showing 108 exit velocity off the bat, 2-0.

Sheerin took control of the game after hitting the first batter of the contest. The freshman allowed his only run in the seventh inning via a solo home-run, 3-1. Command on defense presented the opportunity for the Mount to extend their lead.
 
Evan Smith scored the run in the top of the fifth after reaching on a walk. A batter later, Scott Seeker made it to first after a dropped third strike to put runners on the corner bags. Coach Leoni called for the squeeze, allowing Seeker to act out a steal which provoked a throw, resulting in a run-down and a Smith score, 3-1.
 
After the home-run in the seventh, Sheerin and his defense put away three batters to ice the game.
 
GAME TWO:
 
Trailing the first two innings, the Mount sparked the bats by adding three runs and taking the lead, 3-1. Seeker opened scoring with a sac fly error to right field, scoring Ty Fredo. JT Landwehr followed with a singled to left field, scoring Evan Smith while bringing Shane Wockley to the plate. Wockley hit into a double play, which allowed Tyler Long to score before ending the inning.
 
The Bonnies responded with a run in the top of fifth to cut the deficit, 3-2.
 
The bottom of the sixth, Aiden Tierney subbed as a pinch hitter. Tierney connected with an RBI single through the left side to add to their lead, 4-2.
 
St. Bonaventure was able to string together two runs on three hits in the seventh to knot the game at 4, resulting in extra innings. A two-run home-run over left center gave the Bonnies their first lead since the second inning, 6-4.
 
The Mount responded by putting a runner, Landwehr, on base via hit by a pitch. After a ground out, Efrain Correa, Jr. was called to sub as a pinch hitter. On the first pitch, Correa, Jr. hit a two-run shot over the right field fence, scoring Landwehr, and knotting the game at 6 in the bottom of the eighth.

The Bonnies scored two runs on two hits and two Mount errors in the top of the ninth, adding pressure to the Mount's response. The Mountaineers put runners on first and second yet were unable to score the runs needed to extend or win the game.
