Mount Softball Drops Pair of Games at the Carolina Classic

Chapel Hill, N.C. (February 24, 2024)—Mount St. Mary's saw Lipscomb rally for a 6-5 win in the opening game of the Carolina Classic on Sunday before falling to the host Tar Heels, 7-1, in the second game of the day.

LIPSCOMB 6, MOUNT ST. MARY'S 5

In the opening game of the tournament, the Mount dropped a heart-breaker to Lipscomb, 6-5, with the Bisons rallying for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.

The Mount had staged a dramatic rally in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead.  Tori Bowles laced a one-out double to start the rally with Elizabeth King following with a base hit to put the go-ahead runner at the plate.  After a fly out, Olivia Murphy belted a three-run homer to center field to put the Mount ahead, 5-4.  It was Murphy's first career homer for the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers rallied from a 4-0 deficit to take the one-run lead in the top of the seventh.  Lipscomb scored four times in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead.  The started the comeback with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning on RBI singles from Bowles and Hannah Gartrell

Lipscomb scored twice off the Mount to rally for the win.  The first three runners reached base on base hits to load the bases against Murphy.  A sacrifice fly tied the game, and Josie Polk singled home the winning run.

Bowles finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate for the Mountaineers while Murphy was 1-for-4 with a homer and three RBI.  Murphy allowed six runs in 6.1 innings of work in the circle, allowing 10 hits with a pair of strikeouts.

NORTH CAROLINA 7, MOUNT ST. MARY'S 1

The Mountaineers fell to host North Carolina, 7-1, in the second game of the day.  Abigayle Perry and King each had a double in the game.

The Tar Heels scored four times in the first to take the early lead.  The big hit was a three-run homer from Isabela Emerling.  North Carolina added a run in the second for a 5-0 lead.

The Mount got a run back in the third when Gina Del Giorno singled and stole second to move into scoring position.  Zoe Truxon added a base hit, and an error on the center field allowed Del Giorno to scamper home with the Mount's run.

Maddie Coleman was in the circle for the Mount, allowing six earned runs in a complete-game effort.

The Mount plays George Washington and North Carolina tomorrow on the final day of the tournament.
