EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 21, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's had a tough road to climb in the 2024 home opener, and the #17 ranked Navy Midshipmen were able to take command in an 18-9 final.
Christina Haspert and
Logan Cook were multi-goal scorers for the Mountaineers.
Madison Harmening had an all-around performance of a goal, assist, caused turnover and five ground balls.
Hailey Chester finished with five draw controls and four caused turnovers.
The Midshipmen had three players with hat tricks – Lola Leone, Emily Messinese, and Tori DiCarlo. Leone added an assist to lead her team in points with four.
Following a quick Navy goal, the Mount's defense held firm and Cook was able to muster a 1-1 tie off a free position shot. From there, the visitors unleashed a 4-0 run to complete the quarter. The outburst extended the game to 10-1 before
Anna Salerno answered in the second period.
Shannon McTavish tallied her first career goal with 29 seconds left in the half, but Navy answered to take a 14-4 score into the break.
From this point, the margin never wavered far from 10 points. A fourth quarter score by Harmening put the game at 16-8, which is the closest the Mount would get.
Navy moves to 3-0 on the year while Mount St. Mary's falls to 0-3.
Next Wednesday (Feb. 28) the Mount battles UMBC in a matinee. First draw is at 2 p.m. from Waldron Family Stadium.
