EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 28, 2024) – Junior
Anna Salerno earned a career high for goals with six, and Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse engaged in an energetic comeback against the UMBC Retrievers. The visitors were able to hold the Mount at bay to take the victory, 15-11.
Salerno bested her previous career high of four goals on March 29, 2023 at Manhattan. The performance also moved her into the team lead for goals this season with 10.
Mackenzi Furlong posted multiple goals, and
Abby Yesko,
Madison Harmening, and
Hailey Chester all scored once.
Addison Malone led the defensive charge with five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Camille Thomas and
Kaitlin Price split time in the goal, earning three saves each.
UMBC was led by Katana Nelson and Grace Bruce, both scoring five times.
Four goals came in the opening five minutes as the Retrievers took a 3-1 lead early. Salerno's first tally leveled the contest at the 12:34 mark. Beginning at 8-2, UMBC was able to hold their largest advantage at six, trading goals with the Mount up to 10-4.
With 10 minutes left in the third the Mountaineers made their run. A woman-up scenario gave Furlong a chance to score which she capitalized on. That sparked a 3-0 run as Chester and Salerno found the back of the net. When the Retrievers scored twice, the Mount countered and trailed 12-9 with 9:11 to go. However, that was the closest the deficit would get as UMBC was able to finish off enough goals to fend off the comeback attempt.
Mount St. Mary's travels to Bucknell this Sunday, March 3.
