Mount St. Mary's Falls to Hot Shooting Fairfield, 94-80

Fairfield, Conn. (February 18, 2024)—Mount St. Mary's ran into a hot-shooting Fairfield team in a 94-80 loss at Leo D. Mahoney Arena on Sunday afternoon.  Freshman De'Shayne Montgomery led the Mountaineers with 25 points while Joshua Reaves added 17.  Fairfield hit a school-record 18 three-pointers in the game.

The game was tight early with the Mount taking a 12-10 lead on a Terrell Ard, Jr. bucket.  Fairfield (16-10, 10-5 MAAC) responded with a 19-to-4 run to build a 29-to-16 lead with 7:15 left in the first half.  The Mount was able to cut the deficit to 38-31 after a Montgomery three-pointer, but the Stags scored the final five points of the half, including a Jalen Leach basket at the buzzer to make it 43-31 at the break.

Fairfield extended to a 57-37 lead early in the second half, but the Mount (11-15, 7-8 MAAC) was able to cut the deficit to 12 (60-48) on a Montgomery basket.  Fairfield scored the next seven points and were not threatened the rest of the way.

Montgomery finished the contest with a team-high 25 points while adding four assists with Joshua Reaves adding 17 points in the loss.  Caleb Fields led Fairfield with 26 points, hitting 7-of-10 from three-point range.  Brycen Goodine added 20 points, hitting 6-of-8 from beyond the arc, while Jasper Floyd had 16 and Jalen Leach 14 in the win.  Fairfield hit 11-of-22 (.500) from beyond the arc in the second half and were 18-of-36 (.500) from distance in the game.

The Mount's leading scorer, Dakota Leffew, did not play in the second half due to a lower body injury.  The Mountaineers were also playing without freshman guard Dallas Hobbs, who was also out with a lower body injury.

The Mountaineers are back home for a pair of games next week, hosting Saint Peter's on Friday, February 23, at 7:00 p.m. and Iona on Sunday, February 25, at 2:00 p.m.
