Tomasetti Goes for 29 as Women’s Basketball Soars Over Canisius

EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 10, 2024) – For the third straight home game, a Mount St. Mary's women's basketball player tallied a career high for scoring. This time it was senior Jessica Tomasetti posting 29 as the Mount registered a 70-56 win over Canisius.

The Mountaineers now possess a 9-13 record and are 6-7 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). After starting 0-4 in the conference, the Mount has won six of the last nine. Canisius drops to 12-10, 7-6 in the league.

Tomasetti went 11-for-18 from the field, including a pair of threes, and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. Three more Mountaineers finished in double figures, with Isabella Hunt scoring 13 and Jada Lee and Jo Raflo adding 10 each. Hunt and Raflo came within two rebounds of double-doubles.

Canisius received 19 points and nine rebounds from Sisi Eleko, along with 12 points from Brooklyn Thrash and 11 from Bri Rozzi.

Both offenses started out of the gates slow but got into a groove after the first quarter media. Canisius built a lead of four at the 9-5 mark before the Mount flipped proceedings. A late first quarter run opened a seven-point Mount edge after one, extending it to 16-0 in the next period. Canisius answered with 17 of the next 22 points to level the score at 26. Buckets by Giana Hoddinott, Raflo, and Rosa Revueltas were able to hold off the Griffins and give the Mount a 37-34 halftime lead. 20 of Tomasetti's 29 points came in the opening half.

The visitors pieced together a rally in the third quarter which forced the Mount to respond. With the Griffins up 44-43, the home side answered with another 16-0 push. Revueltas started the chain on an and-one, and Tomasetti ended up being responsible for six points in the rally. With the game now at 59-44, Canisius tried to battle back into the game. Even though the Mountaineers were held off the scoreboard for several minutes, they clamped down on the defensive end to limit the Griffs to eight points in the same span. Baskets by Hunt and Lee down the stretch iced the contest.

Mount St. Mary's takes to the road to face Quinnipiac Thursday (Feb. 15).
