EMMITSBURG, Md. (November 9, 2024) – For the first time in 16 years, Mount St. Mary's men's soccer competes in the postseason. Finishing as the fourth team in a four-way tie, the Mountaineers will enter as the No. 8 seed in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship and challenge the top seeded Iona Gaels.

MOUNT UPDATE

The path to the postseason for the Mount was laid in the early stages of MAAC play, collecting points in each of their first four matches. A draw with Siena on a late goal by Maks Czyz got the point total to 11, enough to secure a place in a four-way tie with Sacred Heart, Manhattan, and Marist – all of whom made the tournament.

Mount St. Mary's comes into the playoffs with 18 goals on the season. Four members of the team – Czyz, Dominik Topolsky, Graham Dougald, and Junee Lee – all scored three times each. Topolsky added four assists for a team-leading season total of 10 points. Julian Marcos has started 16 of 17 games in goal, recording 59 saves.

SCOUTING THE GAELS

Iona clinched the top seed in the tournament with a win over Saint Peter's on the final game of the regular season. The Gaels won six games of eight to get the No. 1 spot, including a 1-0 win over Rider to seal the eventual tiebreaker. Their blemishes are a draw with Fairfield and a loss to Siena. Sergio Gonzalez Fernandez is tied for the most goals in the MAAC with nine. Iona's defense limits the amount of shots on goal, with opponents combining for 59, an average of less than four per match.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES

Sunday marks the seventh meeting between Mount St. Mary's and Iona. The Gaels have won the past three meetings, including both in the MAAC. Mount's wins came in 2001 and 2007.

LOOKING AHEAD

The advancing team competes in the MAAC Semifinals Thursday (Nov. 14).
