EMMITSBURG, Md. (October 29, 2024) – The math is simple for Mount St. Mary's men's soccer when they face Saint Peter's in the 2024 home regular season finale. A victory by the Mountaineers will clinch the program's first playoff berth since the 2008 season.
MOUNT UPDATE
Falling in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match for the first time this season, the Mount conceded two second half goals in a 2-1 defeat at Canisius.
Graham Dougald accounted for the team's goal while
Dominik Topolsky received credit for the assist. Both players are now tied with
Junee Lee in the points column, as all three players have seven for the year.
A win Wednesday points the Mount at 13 points, which is enough to clinch a playoff berth. Iona and Rider have already secured spots in the postseason. The last time a Mountaineers team made the playoffs was back when the 2008 squad finished second, advancing over Monmouth on penalty kicks.
SCOUTING THE PEACOCKS
Last Saturday, Saint Peter's picked up their first victory of the season, defeating Fairfield 2-0. Harvey Ormerod and Cuba Sorensen provided the goals for the Peacocks. The team now has five points in MAAC play, with draws against Canisius and Manhattan added to the total. Conlan Paventi and Tim Strele scored three goals and eight points each to share the team lead.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
With seven previous meetings between the two teams, Mount St. Mary's holds the slight edge over Saint Peter's, four games to three. This includes a 1-1 record in MAAC competition, with the Mount winning 4-3 in 2022 and SPU winning 3-1 last season.
LOOKING AHEAD
Hitting the road for the final two games of the regular season, the Mountaineers take on Siena and Rider. The Saints are the first opponent, with a Saturday (Nov. 2) contest in Loudonville.
