EMMITSBURG, Md. (October 19, 2024) – On his Senior Day,
Dominik Topolsky hit a penalty kick, and the Mountaineers stood firm on defense, punctuated by several
Julian Marcos saves, as the men's soccer team defeated Niagara 1-0 on Saturday.
The three points help Mount St. Mary's maintain a share of the top spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) standings at 3-0-1 in league play. Siena knocked off Iona to hold onto their share of first place.
Topolsky's penalty kick came in the 33
rd minute as Niagara's Thomas Brooks fouled
Graham Dougald. Off his right foot, the senior sent the down past a diving Jamie Barry for the game's lone tally. The score is his second for the campaign, joining a goal registered at Delaware September 10.
With the contest chippy between two sides playing aggressively entering the second 45, Niagara was hit with a red card on Luca Buscaglia in the 56
th minute. Going down to 10 men did not deter the Purple Eagles, who continued to fire away at Marcos and the defense. The Mount's goalkeeper finished with four saves, all coming in the second half.
Hitting the road next Saturday (Oct. 26), the Mountaineers head to Buffalo for a contest with Canisius. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. from the city by Lake Erie.
