Mount St. Mary's Drops Physical Matchup at Saint Peter's, 70-64

Jersey City, N.J. (January 7, 2024)—Mount St. Mary's fell at Saint Peter's, 70-64, in a physical matchup at Run Baby Run Arena on Sunday afternoon.  Dakota Leffew paced the Mountaineers with 19 points while Dallas Hobbs added 16 in the loss.  The Mount falls to 6-9 overall and 2-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Turnovers and rebounding proved to be the difference in the contests.  Saint Peter's scored 20 points off 20 Mount St. Mary's turnovers while holding a 14-to-4 advantage in second chance points in the game.  The Peacocks (8-5, 4-0 MAAC) used a 10-to-2 run to take a 60-48 lead with just over five minutes remaining.  The Mount was able to cut the deficit to five, 60-55, on a Hobbs three-pointer with 2:58 left in the game, but Saint Peter's was able to hold off the Mount down the stretch to earn the win.

Leffew went 7-of-18 from the field and 4-of-12 from three-point range en route to his 19-point game.  He added six rebounds and three assists in the loss.  Hobbs added 16 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Mountaineers.  Jedy Cordilia added nine points and a pair of blocks while Dola Adebayo had six rebounds and four blocks for the Mount.  Corey Washington led all scorers with 25 points while Latrell Reid added 13 and Stephon Roberts 11 in the loss.

The Mount shot 46.8 percent in the game while going 7-for-22 (.318) from three-point range.  Saint Peter's shot 40.0 percent from the field and went 4-of-13 (.308) from three.  The Peacocks finished 22-of-27 at the foul line while the Mount went 13-of-17 at the charity stripe.  Saint Peter's held a 35-to-30 advantage on the boards, including a 13-to-7 margin on the offensive glass.  The Peacocks had 13 steals off 20 Mount turnovers in the game.

Trailing 17-to-9 with eight minutes left in the opening half, the Mount offense started to get in gear.  Leffew hit a three, and after a Saint Peter's bucket, connected on a four-point play to cut the deficit to 19-to-16.  Cordilia hit three free throws to tie the score, and Hobbs hit the first of two free throws for a 20-19 lead.  The Mount fought for the rebound on the miss, and Leffew drained a three for a four-point lead.  Hobbs then had a steal at midcourt and turned that into a basket for a 25-to-19 advantage.  Cordilia scored in the paint for a 31-26 lead, but Saint Peter's closed the half on a high note when Roberts banked in a three at the buzzer to make it 31-29 at the break.
