Mount St. Mary's Mourns Passing of Hall of Famer Woody Stoner

EMMITSBURG, Md. (August 9, 2023) – Thomas "Woody" Stoner, C'62 and member of the Mount Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2002, passed away Wednesday in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He was 84 years old.

As an undergraduate of Mount St. Mary's College, Stoner was a standout performer for both the baseball and soccer teams. His athletic career was guided by the tutelage of two legendary coaches at the Mount – Jim Phelan on the baseball side, and Jim Deegan on the soccer side. One famous story from his playing days involves him hitting a home run to defeat Loyola, despite Phelan's call for a bunt sign.

Upon completion of his studies, he continued to maintain a strong presence in Emmitsburg. He served as head coach for the golf team and until a few years ago, served as the official bookkeeper and scorer for basketball games.

Arrangements for funeral services are pending at this time.
