Three Mount Athletic Programs Achieve Perfect APR Rating

EMMITSBURG, Md. (May 3, 2023) – In a report released by the NCAA and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), three Mount St. Mary's athletic programs achieved perfect APR ratings for seasons through the 2021-22 academic year.  The three programs are the men's and women's tennis teams, along with men's golf.

"The MAAC and its member institutions have set a high standard in academics and our successful multiyear APR shows our student-athletes' dedication in the classroom," said MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. "Congratulations to all the MAAC student-athletes and programs for their continued success in the classroom."

35 student-athletes encompass the makeup of the team in 2021-22, and recent graduates are also a factor in the score. Kevin Farrell leads the men's golf program, and Barrett Elkins oversees tennis.

APR is an acronym for Academic Progress Rate. Implemented in 2003 as part of an ambitious academic reform effort in Division I, the measurement holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term.

Teams with an APR of 1,000 achieve a perfect score with entitlement for rewards, while teams below 930 are subject to penalties.

21 of the 24 varsity teams at Mount St. Mary's are members of the MAAC. Bowling, women's rugby, and men's water polo are part of other conferences or independent, so APR scores from this program are exempt in the conference total.
