EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 8, 2023) – Scoring eight unanswered goals, the Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead which proved insurmountable for the opposing Marist Red Foxes. The Mount fended off a second half surge to win 12-9, earning their fifth win in a row.
At 6-6 (5-1 MAAC), the Mount kept pace with the Manhattan Jaspers for first place in the conference.
Nine Mountaineers found the back of the net, led by a hat trick from
Kelly Gouin.
Jake Krieger finished the contest with two goals, adding two assists for four points.
Connor Beals was 13-for-21 on faceoffs and matched
Steven Schmitt with five ground balls. Goalkeeper
Griffin McGinley withstood Marist's offensive power with 14 saves.
Marist took the initial 1-0 lead before
Jeremy Wilson put the Mount on the scoreboard to draw things level.
William Vandegrift gave the visitors the advantage for good with 10:56 in the first quarter. The pair of scores kicked off the 8-0 run. Every score was recorded by a different player.
The Red Foxes mustered their second goal in the third quarter. After Krieger countered, Marist managed to piece together a 4-0 run, trimming the Mount's lead all the way down to three. Gouin ended the third on a high note, and Krieger maintained it to accumulate an 11-6 lead. That insurance was enough to keep Marist at bay, despite the Poughkeepsians scoring three of the last four goals.
On Wednesday (Apr. 12), the Mount will face Canisius in the home regular season finale. First face off is at 3 p.m. from Waldron Family Stadium.
