EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 12, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse took on a tough challenge by a resilient Canisius team, but some late goals and one final lengthy defensive stand preserved a sixth straight win. For the Mount, it marks the program's longest win streak since the 2003 season.
At 6-1, the Mountaineers maintained their first place tie with Manhattan. The Jaspers defeated LIU, helping the two teams open up a two-game lead on the rest of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) field.
The 15-13 victory was led on the offensive side by
Jared McMahon, with four goals and an assist.
Jeremy Wilson recorded four points, divided in half between goals and assists.
Kelly Gouin ended the game with a hat trick.
On the defensive side, the Mount received a massive day from
Steven Schmitt, hitting career highs for both ground balls (12) and caused turnovers (5). Schmitt's caused turnovers made him one of five Mountaineers to force multiple giveaways, joined by
Jackson Phillips with four,
Ben Ward and
Dan Bradley with three, and
Mitchell Dunham with two.
Connor Beals once again finished the day with more faceoff wins than losses, taking 17 possessions in 29 chances.
Canisius got hat tricks from Colin Kelly and Keegan Kozack, along with 11 saves from Tommy Kunz.
McMahon and Gouin had a pair by the first quarter's end, and a fifth by
Kevin Whitty, Jr. opened up a 5-1 lead. The advantage would grow as high as six, culminating in an 11-5 score in the third quarter. That's when Canisius made a run at it, beginning with a 3-0 run that resulted in four of the last five goals. The Golden Griffins continued the charge with a trio to start the fourth, and Ryan Furlong leveled the score at 12-12 with 10:30 to go.
Both sides traded a score to make it 13-13. Within seconds, McMahon had scored again, and Wilson followed. Then the defense stepped up for long stretches, withstanding a three shot barrage before a shot clock violation with 4:55 left. Turnovers allowed the visitors to dial up the pressure one last time as the time wound down.
Griffin McGinley made a key save and two shots glanced off the post, enabling the Mount to hang on for the win.
The final two games are on the road. Should the Mount emerge victorious against Sacred Heart, it will guarantee a top two finish in the MAAC by season's end. Game time against the Pioneers Saturday (Apr. 15) is at noon.
