Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Seventh Straight Win Equals First Place for Mount Men’s Lacrosse

EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 15, 2023) – Holding on to a 13-12 win over Sacred Heart, Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse won its seventh straight game, marking the team's longest such streak since the year 2000. Not only that, by virtue of Siena defeating Manhattan, the Mount now holds sole possession of first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).

Nine different Mount St. Mary's players posted a goal during the game. Jared McMahon, Kelly Gouin, Cormac Giblin, and Dan Bradley all scored twice. Jake Krieger, TJ Gravante, Connor Barrett, Steven Schmitt and Kevin Whitty, Jr. found the back of the net once each.

Connor Beals continued his dominant faceoff efforts, going 17-for-27 on the day. Mitchell Dunham had the most ground balls with seven, and Schmitt alongside Jackson Phillips had two caused turnovers apiece.

Mount St. Mary's now stands at 8-6 for the year and 7-1 in the MAAC.

Following a quick 2-0 Mountaineers lead, Sacred Heart rallied to go up by 6-3 entering the final minute. A pair of late goals from Krieger and Schmitt put together some positive momentum, and McMahon scored man-up to knot up the game at 6-6 early in the second. The teams went back and fourth until Giblin gave the Mount the lead with 2:32 left, allowing the visitors to take a 9-8 halftime lead.

An offensive slugfest transformed into a defensive struggle for the second half. After Sacred Heart retook the lead, a goal from Gouin kicked off the comeback and a 3-0 run. Gouin would punch another shot home, followed by Dan Bradley. McMahon registered the final tally to take a 13-11 lead into the fourth.

Defense then took over in full. Smothering the Pioneers offense, the Mountaineers limited the competition to five shots for the entire fourth quarter. A lone goal by Carson Spooner around the five minute mark made it interesting, but the Mount clamped down from then on, keeping Sacred Heart from registering a shot on goal.

The regular season finale takes place next Saturday (Apr. 22) at Siena.
