Men's Lacrosse Stages Furious Rally, but Comes Up Just Short in 13-12 Loss at Siena

Loudonville, N.Y. (April 22, 2023)--Mount St. Mary's rallied in the fourth quarter, but came up just short in a 13-12 loss at Siena in the team's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season finale.  Mount St. Mary's saw its seven-game win streak snapped in the defeat, closing out the regular season 8-7 overall and 7-2 in the MAAC.  The Mount shared the MAAC regular season title with Manhattan and will be the No. 2 seed at the MAAC Tournament.  Manhattan defeated the Mount in the regular season meeting this year to win the tiebreaker.

The teams alternated goals in the first quarter with the Saints holding a 3-2 advantage after one quarter of play with Jared McMahon and Kevin Whitty, Jr., providing the Mount's goals.  In the second quarter, the Mount scored four times in the final 3:41 to grab a 6-4 halftime lead.  Kelly Gouin started the run with Jake Kreiger's tally with 2:55 left in the half putting the Mount ahead, 4-3.  After a Siena goal, Kreiger and Connor Beals scored 17 seconds apart to give the Mount a two-goal lead.  Gouin's second goal of the quarter came with 37 seconds left, and Beals followed with his marker for a 6-4 lead.

The Saints (7-6, 5-4 MAAC) scored the first five goals of the second half to build a 9-6 lead.  The Mount's Steven Schmitt gave the Mount a boost heading into the final quarter, scoring with three seconds left in the third to cut the deficit to 9-7.

Siena, which clinched a spot in the MAAC playoffs with the win, connected on back-to-back goals to regain a four-goal lead at 11-7 with 12:11 remaining.  The Mount began a rally, scoring three consecutive timese to cut the Siena lead to 11-10.  McMahon scored the first two during the run that was capped by Kyle Cullen's goal with 7:01 remaining to make it a one-goal game.  The Saints again rebounded, scoring twice, with Rocco Santillo's goal with 2:51 left providing his team with a 13-10 lead.

Jeremy Wilson countered with a goal with 2:11 remaining, and Gouin scored with 29 seconds on the clock to make it 13-12.  Beals won the face-off, but the Mount was unable to get a shot off in the closing seconds.

The Mountaineers will be in action next in the MAAC semifinals on Thursday, May 4.
