EMMITSBURG, Md. (May 4, 2023) – In the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) semifinal, Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse fell to the Marist Red Foxes. The opposition, fed by momentum from a record setting quarterfinal, used a pair of scoring runs and fended off the Mountaineers on defense to take the game 19-7.
Mount St. Mary's ended their first season back in the MAAC with an 8-8 overall record, a 7-2 mark in league play and the regular season co-championship.
Masterful play from
Connor Beals at the faceoff circle, winning 19 of 23 possessions, got matched by the presence of Daniel O'Meara in the Marist net, earning 12 saves in the first half alone on the way to 19 for the game. The strong goalie play allowed the Red Foxes to go ahead despite the Mount taking more shots on goal in the first half.
Andrew Preston entered as the goalie for the Mountaineers, registering eight saves.
Taking advantage of a 6-on-4 to open the game,
Kelly Gouin opened the scoring for the Mountaineers 49 seconds into the contest. That was countered by a furious rally by Marist, rattling off seven straight to complete the first quarter.
Nathan Merchant provided the answer to the Red Foxes run with his first career goal, and Gouin along with
Steven Schmitt posted scores across a 15 second span to bring the game back within five. Marist added two before the halftime horn to lead 11-4 at the break.
Hopes for a second half comeback were dashed in the third quarter as the Red Foxes began the second half with five in a row while keeping the Mount off the scoreboard in the frame.
Jimmy Hayburn and
Noah Persing registered second half scores, and
Edward Gigliotti II completed his senior season with his first career goal.
The Poughkeepsians advance to the conference title game for the first time since 2019.
Men's lacrosse returns to the turf at Waldron Family Stadium in February 2024. Information regarding the team and schedule will be released in the coming months.
