Hamden, Conn. (April 28th, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's split double header after losing game one and winning game two 7-6. The Mountaineers totaled 24 hits today with four home runs.
GAME ONE BREAKDOWN
The game started off quickly in favor of the Bobcats after scoring six runs in the bottom of the second which set the tone of this game. A triple and two home runs highlighted the inning as Quinnipiac made their first push to pull away from the Mount.
A solo shot from
Scott Seeker in the second inning gave the Mount the energy they were looking for to fight back. The top of third rolled around and
David Stirpe started things off by drawing a walk.
Efrain Correa, Jr. then stepped in the box and worked the count in his favor which drew a walk. With runners on first and second,
JT Landwehr stepped to the plate and striped a two base knock to left center which allowed Stirpe to score and Correa, Jr. to advance to third.
Tyler Long was next to the plate and found a hole on the left side which scored Correa, Jr. The Mountaineers responded well with consecutive scoring innings in the third and fourth to cut the deficit in half, 6-3.
Quinnipiac responded with fire as they didn't allow a scoreless inning offensively the rest of the game. The game became out of reach for the Mount after the Bobcats scored four runs in the eighth inning to crush any hope of a Mount miracle.
David Stirpe knocked a three-run bomb which scored
Shane Wockley and
Jayson Kramer in the top of the ninth but with no hope restored the Mount fell in game one.
GAME TWO BREAKDOWN
Game two started much like game one in the sense that the Bobcats took an early lead, 4-0 through two innings. The twist in game two's story is that the Mountaineers found the intensity to make a late game to push the Mountaineers to the win column.
Shane Wockley went 3-4 at the plate with a homer to center field and three RBI. The Mountaineers scored two runs in the third and sixth innings to cut the deficit down to three runs, 5-2. Later in the game the Mount gained a burst of offensive energy after rallying for five runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
Brady Drawbaugh started things off in the eighth with a single to left field. The next batter, a hot bat in
Shane Wockley, stepped up to the plate and striped a double to left field which scored Drawbaugh. Wockley later scored off a
Tyler Long single to center which also batted Stirpe in, 5-6.
With momentum on their side the Mountaineers quickly sent themselves through the bottom of the frame.
Aiden Tierney started things off in the ninth with a single base knock to center field.
Jayson Kramer then stepped to the plate, hitting a double to right field to advance Tierney to third and put runners in prime scoring position. Drawbaugh took one to deep right field and recorded a sacrifice fly as Tierney was able to tag up and cross the plate, 6-6. Kramer advanced to third, giving themselves a solid opportunity to win the game. Wockley came back to the plate and ended his strong day on a single RBI up the middle which allowed Kramer to cross the plate and secure the win for his team
