EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 25, 2023) – Pitching to contact all afternoon, Mount St. Mary's baseball kept the George Mason Patriots on offense Tuesday. However, the home side returned the favor, able to hold the Mountaineers at bay, handing them a 3-1 defeat.
Played in a tidy 2:16, four pitchers limited the Patriots to seven hits throughout the day, backed by sharp defensive work in an errorless effort.
Cam King silenced GMU most of the day, but two runs allowed in the second served the junior a hard luck loss. Relievers
Jett Slepak,
Luke Pryor and
Jeff Davis allowed four runners combined, with Davis conceding a lone run in the eighth.
On offense the Mount pieced together six base knocks – the majority of which came from the top of the order.
Scott Seeker had a nice day at the plate, going 2-for-3. All six hits fell in the singles category, marking the fourth time all season that the Mountaineers went without an extra base hit.
Small ball was the name of the game as the two sides fought to scratch out runs. George Mason got their two in the second on a fielder's choice and a squeeze play. Mount countered in the third on a base hit bunt by
Tyler Long, scoring
Tristan McAlister. The Mountaineers put runners in scoring position in the fifth, sixth and eighth but were unable to find a clutch hit. Insurance came for the Patriots with their one out double off Davis.
Mount St. Mary's stands at 20-19 this season while George Mason improved to an even 20-20.
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play resumes Friday (Apr. 28) as the Mount travels to Hamden, Conn. for a three-game series with the Quinnipiac Bobcats.
