Emmitsburg, Md. (April 23rd, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's baseball drops game three to Maryland Eastern Shore 5-4. The Hawks pitching staff had pitched valiantly all weekend and were able to edge the Mount by a run in today's contest.
The game began with a quick UMES lead after Brantley Cutler scored on an error and Alex Mccoy scored on a Ryan Howe single to the gap in center field, 2-0. The Hawks added two more to their lead in third inning via another Howe single to center and a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt which allowed Mccoy to slide across the plate. The fourth inning rolled around and with the Mount still scoreless the Hawks took advantage with a Brian Cordell solo home run to right field, 5-0.
Mount St. Mary's responded in the in the bottom of the frame with four runs to cut the deficit down to one.
Tristan McAlister started things off with a homer to right field.
Scott Seeker followed with a single to second base which put the Mountaineers in a fine position to scale a comeback.
Tyler Long followed with a perfectly placed bunt of his own to put runners on first and second. A few batters later,
Jayson Kramer stepped to the plate and stroked a double to left center which pushed Seeker across the plate and Long to third, 5-2. With runners on second and third,
David Stirpe singled on a bunt which allowed Long to score and Kramer to advance to third.
Efrain Correa, Jr. got involved with a hard-hit single to third base which pushed Kramer across the plate and Stirpe to second, 5-4.
The rest of the game went scoreless both ways with great pitching on both sides.
Luke Pryor pitched five innings for the Mountaineers, allowed one run on one hit and tallied one strikeout. McAlister went 3-5 at the plate with a home run, including a double in the ninth inning with one out but wasn't able to cross the plate as the Hawks secured game three.
