Emmitsburg, Md. (April 22, 2023)--Mount St. Mary's was edged by visiting Quinnipiac, 5-4, on Senior Day at Waldron Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon in a game delayed four hours by inclement weather. Despite the loss, the Mount earned a spot in the 2023 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference playoffs. The Mount (4-12, 3-5 MAAC) will be seeded sixth and travel to third-seeded Niagara on Sunday, April 30.
Quinnipiac took a 1-0 lead on a Mia Delmond goal just under three minutes into the game. Midway through the first quarter, lightning caused a weather delay that lasted four hours before the game could resume. Once play restarted, the Bobcats (9-7, 5-3 MAAC) made it 2-0 after an Emily Feeney goal. The Mount got on the scoreboard just 5:58 left in the opening quarter on a goal from
Abby Osmeyer, her 31st tally of the year. That would be the Mount's lone goal of the opening half as Quinnipiac took a 4-1 lead into the intermission.
Neither team scored for nearly 11 minutes into the second half before
Julianna Sanchez scored the first of her two goals for the Mountaineers to make it a 4-2 game. Quinnipiac score what would be their final marker of the game with 23 seconds left in the third quarter when Sophia Iaccino found the back of the net.
Sanchez cut the deficit to 5-3 early in the fourth quarter, and the Mount pulled within one with 3:51 remaining when
Erin Anderson converted a nice pass from Osmeyer to make it 5-4. Mount St. Mary's had a pair of chances to tie the score in the closing minutes.
Anna Salerno had her free position shot saved by Quinnipiac goalkeeper Kat Henselder. After the Mount's
Madison Bradley made a save on Feeney with 54 seconds left, the Mount had a final chance to tie. Osmeyer had her potential tying shot save by Henselder with 11 seconds left and the Bobcats were able to run out the clock from there.
Bradley made nine saves for the Mount in the game while Henselder made 12 saves in the victory.
Abigail Zeigenfuse had six draw controls and four caused turnovers for the Mount while
Margaret Lonergan had three caused turnovers. The Mount held a 21-to-18 shots advantage in the game.
The Mount finished in a three-way tie for fifth in the MAAC standings with Canisius and Iona. Canisius and the Mount advanced out of that tiebreaker due to wins over third-seeded Niagara during the regular season. Canisius gets the five seed due to its victory over the Mount earlier in the year.
