Mount St. Mary’s Sees Niagara Pull Away Late in MAAC Quarterfinals

EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 30, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse saw their 2023 season conclude Sunday in Lewiston, New York, as Niagara used a late rally to achieve a 14-10 victory.

Erin Anderson led the Mount's scoring effort with a four goal game. Anna Salerno added a hat trick, while Abby Osmeyer was also a multi-goal scorer. Sophia Culmone caused two turnovers and Madison Bradley made seven saves.

The Purple Eagles advance to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) semifinals in large part from five goals from Lexi Braniecki.

After Niagara jumped out to a 2-0 lead, the Mountaineers countered with goals from Osmeyer and Salerno to level the score at 2-2 in a high scoring start. The Purple Eagles would respond a couple times before the Mount's defense set in for a time. Osmeyer replied to make it 4-3 to the home side after one.

In the second quarter, Mount St. Mary's stayed within striking distance and made a furious rally across the final 10 minutes. Anderson supplied two of the goals, with a Molly Molchanoff tally sandwiched in between. The second of Anderson's goals tied the game at 6-6, and that score held firm at halftime.

Strong defense kept up for several minutes until Niagara's Rachel Crane broke through with a goal at the 9:06 point. Switching up the lineup a bit, the Mount found Salerno alone in the goal off an assist from Margaret Lonergan.

But Riley LaTray gave the Purple Eagles the advantage into the fourth, posting a shot to the net in the closing seconds. This provided positive momentum for Niagara who strung together a 6-0 run in rapid succession. However, that left enough time for the Mount to push the comeback attempt. Anderson scored twice and Salerno once in the span of 90 seconds, but that would be as far as they could get. Niagara used effective defense, played keep away and added a late goal to hang on.

The Mount's season concludes with a record of 4-13.
