Emmitsburg, Md. (April 22nd, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's takes game two 6-4, just before the rain started coming down heavily.
Shane Wockley batted a perfect 3-3 at the plate with a solo and a two-run shot to give the Mountaineers the boost they needed to win this game.
The game started with an early 1-0 lead by the Mountaineers in the second inning. Wockley started things off with a solo bomb to left center field on a 2-2 count. The Hawks quickly responded in the third inning after Brantley Cutler singled through the right side which batted in a run, 1-1.
The Mount broke away from UMES in the fourth with a three-score inning.
Tyler Long started things off with a ground-rule double to left field.
Jayson Kramer followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Long to third.
Brady Drawbaugh then draws an intentional walk to put runners on the corner bags with
David Stirpe next up to the plate. Stirpe bunted a beautifully placed ball down the first base line that stopped on the chalk, which allowed Drawbaugh to score and earned himself a single. Two batters later
JT Landwehr wore a pitch to load the bases with the top of the order back to the box.
Tristan McAlister ripped a hard groundball to third base, reaching first on the error and allowed Wockley to score, 4-1.
UMES gained one back in the fifth through another Cutler RBI double, batting Brian Cordell in. Cordell came back to the plate in the sixth and knotted things up at four with a two-run home run to center field.
The Mountaineers went to the bottom of the frame with vengeance on their mind as consecutive homers were cranked over the center field fence by Wockley and Stirpe to retake the lead, 6-4.
A quick three and out in the seventh from
Jeff Davis brought his team back to the dugout with momentum. Davis finished his game with the win through 2 2/3 innings pitched, allowed two runs on two hits, and struck five batters out.
Jake Andrews finished the game for the Mountaineers as he struck two of the three batters out in the ninth inning and earned his first save of the season.
