Baseball Defends E.T. Straw in Consecutive Win Over Peacocks

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 15, 2023) – Mount Saint Mary's has picked up consecutive conference wins over Saint Peter's. Today the Mountaineers defended ET Straw Family Stadium until the final pitch in a win, 8-7. Jett Slepak earns his fourth win of the season (4-0) after pitching 3.2 innings and allowed one run on four hits.

The game began 1-1 after the first inning. Tyler Long started the scoring today after being batted in by Jayson Kramer in the first. The next inning, the Mountaineers were able to spark a two-out rally which started with a Shane Wockley steal to second base. JT Landwehr then stepped to the plate and striped a single to left center which allowed Wockley to score. Back to the top of the order put Tyler Long in the box, Long reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a poor throw by the shortstop which allowed Landwehr to round the base and score, 3-1.

The Peacocks gained one back after loading the bases with one out. Jett Slepak relieved Brendan Yagesh and was able to salvage the inning by pitching out of a scary situation, allowing only one runner to reach paydirt.

After the third the Mount didn't leave an inning scoreless, while the Peacocks were only able to notch runs in two innings.

The Mountaineers entered the bottom frame of the seventh ahead 6-3 and were able to add more cushion after scoring two additional runs. Kramer led off the inning by drawing a walk which brought Brady Drawbaugh to the plate. Drawbaugh found a gap in center field to put runners on first and second. Wockley was next to bat as he followed with a single to center which allowed Kramer to score. David Stirpe flied out to right field but was enough to push Drawbaugh to third base and in prime scoring position. Efrain Correa, Jr. made his first appearance in the box and plopped a dart into shallow left field which allowed Drawbaugh to cross the plate, 8-3.

Saint Peter's found a new burst of energy after quickly loading the bases with no outs in the eighth. Jeff Masicotte stepped to the plate and hit a grand slam to bring the peacocks within one. Jake Andrews was able to pitch out and send his team to the dugout still ahead in the game, 8-7.

Andrews then came out in the ninth with revenge on his mind as he pitched two force outs and one strikeout, a three up-three down ninth inning to secure a win for his team.
