Emmitsburg, Md. (April 16, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's won a thrilling contest today 16-12 after being down 10 runs. The Mountaineers went down big early yet had the stomach to dig themselves out to sweep the Peacocks and increase their conference record to an even 6-6. The Mountaineers also eclipsed their season high for hits in a game after an impressive 22 hit performance.
Saint Peter's shot out of a cannon in the first inning after scoring 10 runs with three home runs. Nick Markantonato homered to right center to start the scoring for the Peacocks which batted three runs in. Sam Haney and Jack Eichler followed with homers of their own to put the Peacocks ahead 10-0 going into the bottom of the frame.
Scott Seeker started things off for the Mount after sending an absolute bomb over right field which batted
Tyler Long in. A few batters later
Jayson Kramer striped a double to left center which allowed
Aiden Tierney to score and gain three runs back.
The Mount went to their bullpen to bring them back into this game. Following the first inning, coach
Cullen Moore and his pitching staff pitched six consecutive scoreless innings to give their team the chance they needed to make a nothing less than stellar comeback.
A big momentum swing as the Mount gained all 10 runs back and added one for comfort in the first three innings. In the bottom of the third inning,
David Stirpe started things off with an RBI single to center field which allowed
Shane Wockley to cross the plate. A few batters later,
Tyler Long followed with a single to left center which allowed Stirpe to score. The next batter was Seeker, a player who started this game off hot, as he striped his first triple of the season to right center, batting Long in. Batting around the order, Tierney stepped back into the box and doubled down the left field line which brought Seeker in. Kramer capped the third inning off with a solo shot to right center, 11-10.
The Mountaineers started teeing off on a diminished Peacock bullpen as Long went 5-5, Seeker went 3-5 with a two-run home run, Tierney went 3-3, Kramer went 3-4 with a three-run home run, and
Efrain Correa, Jr. went 2-4.
Luke Pryor cashed in his first win of the season after pitching two scoreless innings in the third and fourth, two very crucial innings that gave the Mount the ability to make their resurgence.
The Peacocks scored two in the eighth, but the damage had already been done as the Mountaineers went on a tear that couldn't be matched. Mount St. Mary's secured their 18
th win to bring them to 18-16 on the season and 6-6 in conference.
