Mount St. Mary’s Holds Off Rally in Home Win Over Saint Peter’s

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 14, 2023) – The Mountaineers held off the Peacocks late in the game to take game one of the weekend series, 18-12. Cooper Adams won his sixth of the season (6-1) after pitching 6.0 innings and recording six strikeouts.

The game started with a 2-1 Mount lead after the first inning. Aiden Tierney started things off with an infield single after hustling to beat out the throw. Tierney then stole second, one of his three steals today, to put himself in scoring position. Two walks loaded the bases for a Shane Wockley two RBI single to deep right field allowing Jayson Kramer and Tierney to cross the plate.

Adams struck out six consecutive batters to send the Mountaineers into the bottom of the third with momentum. Brady Drawbaugh started things off with a double to left field on the first pitch. David Stirpe singled to short stop which allowed Drawbaugh to score and then stole second to put himself in position to score. Efrain Correa, Jr. was hit by a pitch, one of two times today, to put runners on first and second. Tyler Long knocked his first of two home runs to left field, allowing Correa, Jr. and Stripe to cross the plate. Next to bat was Scott Seeker who followed with a deep solo shot to center field. The Mount wasn't finished there as Tierney scored his second of the day via a Jayson Kramer single to second base, 8-1.

The Peacocks gained four back in the fourth, starting with a Sam Haney two run home run shot. Jeff Masicotte doubled to center field which brought in another run and advanced Rece Stapp to third base. A sac fly to left field brought the Peacocks fourth run in to reduce the deficit, 8-5.

The Mount responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Shane Wockley started the scoring off with a solo moon shot to left field. Later in the inning, a misinterpreted out via a failed hidden ball trick kept the fourth alive for the Mountaineers and advanced Stirpe to third. Stirpe then scored on an errant throw by the catcher to put the Mount ahead, 11-5.

Saint Peter's gained three runs back by scoring one in the fifth and two in sixth to cut the lead in half, 11-8.

The Mountaineers responded with a four run seventh inning rally. Tierney led off the inning by drawing a walk and stealing second. Kramer recorded his second RBI of the day after striping a single to right field, pushing Tierney across the plate. Later in the inning, with two outs, JT Landwehr found a gap in left center with a base clearing double which allowed Correa Jr., Drawbaugh, and Kramer to score, 15-8.

Luke Pryor made an appearance in the eighth and threw a three up, three down inning with two strikeouts and one fly-out. The Mountaineers scored three more runs in the bottom of the frame, and it started with a Long solo homer to left field. Tierney was hit by a pitch and took his anger out on the base path as he stole second and third base. With Tierney and Drawbaugh in scoring position Shane Wockley striped a single to right field and cleared the base path, 18-8.

The Peacocks didn't go away quietly as they quickly loaded the bases. Haney hit a rare grand slam over the score board in hopes of sparking a huge rally. Blake Beal decided that's how it wasn't going to play out as he was successful in pitching out of the inning and securing a win for his team.
