EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 1, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's women's water polo had trouble getting the offense going Saturday evening, and LIU capitalized on power plays to defeat the Mount 12-3 in Lexington, Virginia.
Defense did its best to try and rummage new possessions.
Samantha Bright rejected 10 LIU shots, and earned four of the team's 12 steals on the evening. There were also seven drawn exclusions for the Mount in the contest.
LIU's tough defense proved even stronger, as many shots either landed off the bar or were intercepted en route. Turnovers were detrimental to Mount St. Mary's, guilty of 20 giveaways. 10 exclusions committed further inhibited efforts, and the Sharks pounced on the opportunities, scoring four times in 6v5 situations and thrice on counters.
Anna Kegel was able to find ways past the Sharks defense, scoring twice on the evening – one off a drive, and again post up.
Ana Luisa Cotta got the Mount's third goal off a penalty shot.
The Mount is now 11-8 (3-4 MAAC) this year.
Games resume tomorrow (Apr. 2) with a challenge against #17 Wagner before taking on hosts VMI.
