EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 1, 2023) – A late rally was unable to overcome a tough first half for Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse, falling two goals shy of the Siena Saints in an 8-6 final.
Anna Salerno scored multiple goals for the fifth straight game with two, joined for a team high by
Juliaan Sanchez.
Erin Anderson bumped up her team lead in assists with a pair. Taking a hard luck loss,
Madison Bradley saved 10 of the 18 shots on goal.
Abigail Zeigenfuse had four ground balls and
Margaret Lonergan caused three turnovers.
Siena received four goals from Jordan Bentley and eight saves from Sabrina Krasner. The Saints remain perfect in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at 3-0.
The Saints seized the momentum in the first quarter and hung on the rest of the way for a wire-to-wire finish. Going up 2-0 quickly, and after the Mount's offense broke in on a Sanchez goal, Siena rallied for another pair to lead 4-1 after 15 minutes. The lone goal in the second quarter came 40 seconds in by Bentley and the Saints took a 5-1 advantage into halftime.
Salerno struck to begin the second half, and strong defense forced three turnovers to keep Siena off the board. Sanchez followed suit with 9:31 left in the third to pull within two. The home team got one back and held the Mount scoreless into the fourth. An early goal in the final frame put the contest out of reach, even though the Mountaineers fought for three goals in the period.
Hailey Chester picked up a score, and
Dani Donoghue benefited off a free position.
Mount St. Mary's welcomes Iona Wednesday (Apr. 5) for a noontime start.
