EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 1, 2023) – A monstrous first half on offense propelled Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse to another conference victory, defeating the Quinnipiac Bobcats 18-11.
The Mount now has four straight wins and by virtue of Manhattan losing to Marist, ave moved into a tie for first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Their overall record stands at 5-6 (4-1 MAAC).
Kelly Gouin had a big first quarter, leading to a game high five goals.
Jared McMahon crossed 100 points for his career, matching Gouin's point total with four goals and two assists.
Jeremy Wilson,
TJ Gravante and
Cormac Giblin all registered two goals in the game.
Steven Schmitt and
Mitchell Dunham maintained their presence on the field. Schmitt earned 10 ground balls and a caused turnover, while Dunham pitched in five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Ben Ward forced another three turnovers, helping the Mount achieve 11 on the day.
In the battle for top face off player in the MAAC,
Connor Beals edged the Bobcats' Demitri George. Beals edged George in faceoffs 13-12, but that number is more impressive give Beals took 10 fewer opportunities.
Bobby Turso arguably had the best day in the circle, winning nine of 13 chances.
Mount St. Mary's showed no mercy from the outset, blazing out of the gate with a 3-0 start. Gouin twice and Wilson once supplied the trio of goals in a rapid 100 seconds. The hat trick for Gouin came minutes later to put the Mount up 4-1 with 8:53 remaining, and his fourth with 4:50 rounded out the team's first quarter scoring. Quinnipiac did shorten the deficit with a pair to make it 5-3 heading to the second.
Another fast start of five unanswered goals gave the Mount the upper hand. McMahon and Gravante found the back of the net twice, along with
Jake Krieger. The slew of scores once again happened in quick succession as the Mountaineers built a 10-3 lead with more than 10 minutes still on the clock. With 3:12 left, Giblin scored to grant the Mount its largest advantage at 12-4.
Quinnipiac worked to come back in the third, but in the end, the two teams wound up playing even for the second half. Schmitt scored on a break off the faceoff in the third quarter and
Kyle Cullen put his name on the scoresheet in the fourth.
Heading away from Emmitsburg next Saturday (Apr. 8), Mount St. Mary's battles Marist in Poughkeepsie.
