EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 3, 2023) – A game-winning penalty with no time left on the clock against Westcliff and clutch fourth quarter play versus La Verne gives Mount St. Mary's a perfect 2-0 Friday at the Convergence Tournament in La Verne, California.
 
With the victories, the Mount are off to an 8-2 start, matching their win total from a year ago.
 
Annefleuer ten Bloemendal was the leading scorer with 10 goals on the day, including the game winner in the opener, and added eight drawn exclusions. Beatrice Vieira added four assists versus Westcliff, with Ana Luisa Cotta and Heather Lock supplying three assists each versus La Verne. Lock and Cotta were also instrumental in steals throughout the day.
 
Game one was a back-and-forth event, with the Mount leading after the first and third quarters. Westcliff tied the game on a penalty before each team compiled a 3-0 run to set up a level score in an exciting final two minutes.
 
Goals by ten Blomendal and Rebecca Valentine were countered by opponents' scores up to the 53 second mark. An infraction by Westcliff gave the ball to the Mount's goalie Pip Piper. The last second heave was turned aside by a field player, but illegally done so with two hands. That allowed ten Bloemendal to plant a corner pocket shot to break the deadlock and grant the Mountaineers the win.  
 
In the nightcap, the Mount battled back from an early deficit, built an 8-5 halftime lead, but allowed La Verne to pull back within one – 10-9 – entering the fourth quarter. Valentine began the Mount's surge towards victory with a goal at the 7:30 mark. La Verne made a brief response, but a 3-0 run with two more Valentine goals and another by Kegel helped seal the deal.
 
Day two features Concordia Irvine and Pacific as opponents. The first contest starting at 2:30 p.m. Eastern.
