LEXINGTON, Va. (March 29, 2023) – A host of Mount St. Mary's players found the back of the net Wednesday as the Mount seized an early lead and rode it to a 20-5 victory over VMI at Drill Field #2.
The win is the team's third in a row and improves them to 3-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.
Cormac Giblin had the most goals with a hat trick of three. He was one of five multi-goal scorers, joined by
Kelly Gouin,
William Vandegrift,
Noah Persing, and
Kyle Cullen. 11 of the goals had assists attached, with
Kevin Whitty, Jr. and
TJ Gravante supplying two each.
A big reason for the offensive showing were faceoffs. The trio of
Connor Beals,
Bobby Turso and
Ethan Holobinko won 21 of the 27 faceoffs in the circle. Beals alone won 79 percent of his tries, picking up seven ground balls and scoring a goal along the way.
Steven Schmitt matched Beals in the ground ball category and forced two turnovers.
Jordan Hartley scored twice for VMI and the goalies combined for 19 saves for a busy day. The Keydets fall to 4-6 (1-3 MAAC) this season.
VMI registered the first tally on the day, but
Jake Krieger challenged that quickly to force the tie. Gravante's goal at the 10:56 mark of the first quarter put the Mount up for good. The pair of goals were part of a 4-0 run. Scores in the final minute by Gouin and
Jeremy Wilson put the game at 6-2 after the first quarter.
Before the Keydets could score again, the visitors pieced together a 5-0 run to accumulate a 10-3 halftime advantage. After the two sides traded one goal to open the second half, the Mount experienced smooth sailing with nine unanswered to bury the contest.
Jared McMahon kicked off the run and Persing punctuated the third period with back-to-back tallies.
Armond Beausoleil,
Connor Barrett and
Jimmy Hayburn capped off the day with fourth quarter scores.
Senior Day takes place Saturday (Apr. 1) when Mount St. Mary's challenges Quinnipiac. The game starts at 12 p.m. with the ceremony occurring pregame.
