Bowles Blast Lifts Mount to Win over Lafayette

Emmitsburg, Md. (March 19, 2023)--Tori Bowles belted a tie-breaking two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to propel Mount St. Mary's to a 4-1 win over visiting Lafayette in the final game of the Mount Softball Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus.  Elizabeth King pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up her first victory of the season as the Mount improved to 10-12 on the season.

On a cold and blustery day, it was the Mountaineers that broke out on top with a run in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs and no one on base, Mariah Godde singled to the hole at short, and Kassidy Johnson followed with a double to deep center field to score Godde with the first run of the game.

Mount starter Amaya Bowman held the Leopards (2-16-1) in check for the first three innings, but Lafayette broke through with a run in the top of the fourth.  With one out, Grace Harvey doubled and was replaced by pinch runner Olivia Catalina.  After Megan Coyle walked, Catalina was caught by Bowles trying to steal third for the second out of the frame.  Kaili Reitano drew a walk, and Marisa Powell singled down the right field line to bring home Coyle with the tying run.  King came on in relief and got the final out on a lineout to center fielder Julia Vincent.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning.  Hannah Gartrell singled to left to start the inning, and she was replaced by pinch runner Vanessa MartinKaia Bonshock followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Martin into scoring position.  Bowles stepped up to the plate and drilled the first pitch she saw over the center field fence to put the Mount on top, 3-1.  Godde followed with a base hit up the middle for her third hit of the game, and she came around on Johnson's second RBI double of the contest that put the Mount ahead, 4-1.  King set the Leopards down in order in the seventh to secure the win.

Johnson went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI while Godde was 3-for-3 with two runs scored in the win.  King struck out three while allowing just two hits in 3.1 scoreless innings of work to earn the win.  Bowman allowed one run and three hits in 3.2 innings.

The Mount continues its homestand on Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. matchup with George Washington at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus.
