Emmitsburg, Md. (March 22, 2023)--Hannah Gartrell's walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Mount St. Mary's to a 2-1 win over George Washington on Wednesday afternoon at Our Lady of the Meadows Field. The Mountaineers improve to 11-12 on the season with the come-from-behind victory.
George Washington (10-10) broke out on top with a run in the top of the third inning. Daniella Lew led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on an Ashley Corpuz double. The Colonials had a runner on third with one out in the top of the fourth, but Mount starting pitcher
Avery Neuhart got out of the jam with a popout and a groundout to keep it a one-run game.
The Mountaineers rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the sixth.
Maggie Kane started the rally with a bunt single, and then moved into scoring position by stealing second base. After a flyout to center field,
Kaia Bonshock came through with a triple off the fence in left center field to plate Kane with the tying run.
Neuhart set the Colonials down in order in the top of the seventh, and worked around a one-out single by Corpuz in the top of the eighth, to keep it a 1-1 tie heading into the bottom of the inning. Abigayl Perry drew a walk to open the inning, and moved into scoring position with a steal of second base. Kane was retired on a pop out to third for the first out of the inning, Gartrell followed with the game-winning hit. The junior laced a single to left field to bring home Perry with the winning run.
Neuhart matched her career high with eight strikeouts in the complete-game victory. She allowed on earned run while scattering six hits in eighth innings of work to improve to 4-2 on the season. Bonshock went 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and an RBI.
The win was the Mount's first against George Washington since March 11, 2014, snapping an eight-game losing streak in the series. The Mount is now 9-18-1 all-time against the Colonials, including a 7-4 mark at home. The win improved the Mount's record to 8-2 during the team's 12-game homestand. The Mountaineers are 21-6 at home over the past two seasons.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Tuesday, March 28, with a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader against Coppin State at Our Lady of the Meadows Field.
