Fourth Quarter Scoring Torrent Leads Mount Men’s Lacrosse Over LIU

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 18, 2023) – Trailing 12-11 entering the fourth quarter, Mount St. Mary's found an offensive spark in the final frame. Scoring five times in the period, the Mount passed by LIU to earn a 16-13 victory.

The team now stands at 2-6 (1-1 MAAC), picking up their first victory as a returning member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Kelly Gouin moved into the starting lineup and delivered a career day with six goals. Cormac Giblin added five points on two goals and three assists. Jared McMahon and Jake Krieger were also multi-goal scorers for the Mountaineers.

Steven Schmitt had a big day at midfield, picking up eight ground balls, causing four turnovers and winning two faceoffs. Connor Beals won 18 of 28 faceoff opportunities, part of 22 wins for the team on the day. Griffin McGinley picked up the win in goal thanks to eight saves, and an offensive assist for good measure.

In addition to the late outburst, the Mount's offense enjoyed an outstanding first quarter. At the end of 15 minutes, Gouin alone had scored four times, including 2-for-2 on man-up chances. McMahon, Jeremy Wilson and Kyle Cullen added tallies to build a 7-2 lead.

LIU countered in the second with the final five goals entering halftime. The Mountaineers saw the well run dry on offense for eight minutes, allowing the Sharks to own a 9-8 lead at the break. Three more in the net to start the third gave the visitors their largest advantage on the day at 12-9.

Lockdown defense kept the Sharks at bay for the rest of the game. Krieger and Dan Bradley posted goals to close the gap to 12-11, and a shot from McMahon with 12:15 left tied the contest. After four minutes deadlocked, Krieger found Giblin for the go-ahead score. TJ Gravante supplied another at the 5:10 mark that in hindsight put the game out of reach. LIU countered to pull within one, but two late goals by the Mount sealed the win.

Mount St. Mary's travels to Wagner next Saturday (Mar. 25).
