Emmitsburg, Md (March 12, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's lost a thriller in game one in the ninth inning after Tony Krueger hit a double down the right field line allowing three runs to cross the plate ending the scoring, 10-7. Game two played through six innings in which the Mountaineers lost 13-2.
GAME ONE
An active first inning put the Mount ahead two runs after
Jayson Kramer recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice which allowed
Tyler Long to score.
David Stirpe continued the scoring after placing a sacrifice fly in left field, batting
Scott Seeker in.
UMBC tied the game in the fifth as Justin Taylor grounded out to the shortstop which allowed Diaz to score, 3-3. The Retrievers kept the scoring going in the sixth and the seventh with solo homeruns by Ryan and Diaz. RBIs from Molessa and a wild pitch thrown by
Jake Andrews allowed Molessa to score, 7-3 going into the bottom of the seventh.
Brady Drawbaugh stepped to the plate with one out and lined a triple to left field, putting himself in scoring position, and notching the first triple for the team this year.
Jayson Kramer knocked a two-run shot out of the park to bring the Mountaineers within two, 7-5. Solid defense brough the Mount to the bottom of the eighth with some momentum.
Tristan McAlister in the box with one out, was able to find a hole in center field for a single. A batter later
Scott Seeker joined
Jayson Kramer in the two-run homerun category hitting a moon shot over right field, knotting the score 7-7 going into the ninth inning.
Diaz and Molessa both singled putting runners on first and second with one out. Ryan on a 3-2 count was able to advance to first after
Jeff Davis was called for a pitch clock infraction, which loaded the bases. The pitch clock rule was initiated this season, a rule that the pitcher must begin his motion to deliver the pitch before the expiration of the 20 second timer and if violated are charged a ball and vice versa a batter charged a strike. So, with the bases loaded and one out, Krueger had a base clearing and ultimately game-deciding double that put UMBC ahead three.
The Mountaineers were able to load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't muster a rally to win the game.
GAME TWO
Snowy weather conditions and a stinger of a loss in the game prior put the Mount in a tough position to bounce back. Control of his pitches early troubled
Luke Pryor and the Mount's defense as they went down 7-0 through three innings.
Scott Seeker hit his second two run homerun of the day, earning four RBIs to his tally. Yet, the homerun wasn't enough as the Retrievers kept their foot on the gas, scoring six more runs before the game was called after the sixth inning.
