EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 4, 2023) – The Mount St. Mary's women's water polo team plays its one and only home game Sunday afternoon, battling the Mercyhurst Lakers.
Before the opening sprint off, the Mount will honor three graduate students competing in their ultimate college season –
Pip Piper,
Annefleur ten Bloemendal and
Serena Thurman.
MOUNT UPDATE
Beginning the 2023 campaign last Saturday, the Mountaineers raced out to a 14-6 lead before fending off a late rally to defeat Saint Francis U, 14-12. It's the second straight year the Mount won its opener, after defeating VMI to start 2022 in overtime.
Four players – ten Bloemendal,
Heather Lock,
Anna Kegel and
Ana Luisa Cotta – all registered hat tricks in the victory. Piper collected 13 saves, and
Robyn Currie and ten Bloemendal added four steals each.
SCOUTING THE LAKERS
Merychurst seeks a bounce back year after going 3-20 in 2022. One of those wins was against the Mount on February 20
th as part of the Curtis Robinette Memorial Invite in Erie by a 12-10 final.
Leading goal scorer Hanna Good returns for her senior season, finding the back of the net 31 times last year. Rachel Vlieststra also comes back after leading in assists in 2022 with 20. Marley Ramon compiled 113 saves over the previous season.
LOOKING AHEAD
Next weekend is the Bison Invitational, hosted by Bucknell University. The Mount rematches with Mercyhurst before challenging St. Francis Brooklyn and Princeton.
