EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 25, 2023) – Trailing at several instances Saturday, the Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse team stayed determined against the UMBC Retrievers, rallying to tie on multiple occasions. But a fourth quarter run by the home side was too much in the end, and the Mount fell by a 15-10 final.
Dani Donoghue once again set the offensive pace for the Mountaineers. This time, the senior found the back of the net six times, coming within one of her career high. Four teammates also tallied in the game, including the first career goal for
Anna Salerno.
Abigail Zeigenfuse added an assist and secured half of the team's draw controls.
UMBC had multi-goal efforts from several players, led by Dymin Gerow with four.
The Retrievers set the pace in the first quarter with a 3-0 run to open the game. Donoghue and Salerno pulled the Mountaineers within one before a man down goal doubled UMBC's lead. After the home team scored man up with 9:39 in the second, the Mount's defense clamped down to allow the offense a 3-0 to complete the first half. Donoghue scored twice and
Mackenzi Furlong added the tying shot with seconds left.
Teams traded 2-0 runs in the third quarter. UMBC scored 39 seconds in, and a second man down conversion gave them an 8-6 edge. Following a 10-minute dry spell, Donoghue broke through again with two more goals to level the game at eight.
However, the contest turned decidedly to UMBC after that. Gerow scored to end the quarter, sparking another 3-0 run.
Lindsey Tolliver tried to stem the tide, but the Retrievers countered with another four consecutive goal streak to lock in the outcome.
Mount St. Mary's returns home to face La Salle at 2 p.m. next Saturday (March 4).
