Valiant Comeback for Women’s Lacrosse Falls Short Versus High Point

EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 18, 2023) – Needing four goals to tie and five to go ahead, Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse made a strong fourth quarter effort to make the High Point Panthers sweat. After the Mount pulled within one, the home standing Panthers fended off the challenge and took a 10-8 victory Saturday.

For the second straight contest, Dani Donoghue posted two goals. She was joined by Abby Osmeyer who registered her first goals as a Mountaineer. Mackenzi Furlong, Logan Cook and Julianna Sanchez also found the back of the net for the first as members of the Blue & White. Abigail Zeigenfuse had three assists, three caused turnovers, and three draw controls.

Emma Genovese led High Point to their first win of the year with a four-goal showing.

It was the Panthers who got on the board first by scoring the opening two goals of the game. Hailey Chester answered at the 10:44 mark with her second on the season. Sanchez's score later in the frame halved the Mount's deficit back to 4-2. Osmeyer's first and a free position from Furlong brought the game to 5-4 with 6:18 remaining in the half, and both defenses ensured that would be the score at the break.

High Point established the benchmark for the Mount's comeback in the third. A 3-0 Panthers run to begin the half was stymied by Cook's free position tally, but HPU tacked on three goals to increase their edge to 9-5 entering the fourth.

Taking advantage of another free position shot, Donoghue got the rally started. Tough defense over the next few minutes kept the Panthers off the board, allowing for an offensive spark of two goals across 70 seconds. Osmeyer and Donoghue combined for the punch, pulling Mount St. Mary's to one goal at 9-8.

Molly Molchanoff caused a turnover for the game-tying opportunity but the ensuing clear attempt failed. High Point used the opportunity to quash the visitors' rally with a score from Genovese. Mount's defense held firm to try and return the favor, but the Panthers answered as the contest ended.

February 25th sees the Mount back on the road to battle UMBC. A noon time start is scheduled.
