Second Half Offensive Torrent Leads Mount Men’s Lacrosse Over NJIT

EMMITSBURG, Md.  (February 18, 2023) – With nine goals in the second half, Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse picked up their first win of the season, defeating the NJIT Highlanders 13-10 in Newark, New Jersey.

The duo of Jared McMahon and Cormac Giblin posted four goals apiece for the Mount in the victory. McMahon was especially efficient, scoring 40 percent of the time. William Vandegrift added a multi-goal effort with two in the back of the net. Jake Kreiger, Kyle Cullen, and Jeremy Wilson finished the day on two points each.

Mitchell Dunham picked up five of the team's 29 ground balls, and Colin Allen added two caused turnovers. Facing 25 shots on net, goalkeeper Griffin McGinley denied 15 of those shots.

The two sides fought to a 4-4 tie in the first half. Mount St. Mary's established themselves early with a 3-0 run out of the gates. Kreiger's score set things in motion, followed by the firsts for McMahon and then Giblin. NJIT retorted with four in a row to snag a 4-3 edge in the second quarter, which lasted for 47 seconds before McMahon planted home his second to level things up again.

A penalty at the end of the second quarter gave the Mount an extra man opportunity which Giblin took full advantage of. NJIT's Arthur Miller responded in kind with a man down goal while the penalty was still in effect to put the game at 5-5.

This moment is where the Mount cemented control. Vandegrift scored, followed by Cullen two minutes later. After no team scored for eight minutes, McMahon and Giblin earned hat trick on consecutive possessions to complete a 4-0 outburst. NJIT finished the period by scoring two of the next three to make it 10-7 Mountaineers heading into the fourth.

Penalties for the visitors allowed NJIT to maintain a presence as the clock wound down, but the Mount kept the Highlanders at arm's length with key goals by Vandegrift, Nolan Krasnick and McMahon.
