Farmville, Va. (February 18, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's erupted for six runs in the top of the ninth to lead to the consecutive come from behind win over Longwood in an 8-5 win on Saturday. The Mount batted around in the top of the ninth to rally for the win.
Tyler Long continued his torrid start to the season with three hits to lead the offense.
Senior pitcher
Luke Pryor started the game for the Mountaineers and pitched well. Pryor allowed zero runs on no hits through 4.2 innings before he was relieved by freshman
Jackson Snyder, leaving a runner on first. Pryor threw 84 pitches, finished with two strikeouts looking, but struggled with control, allowing eight walks.
The Lancers were held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Hayden Harris hit a solo homerun to mark the first score of the game. The home run ignited the Lancers offense as Longwood added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh.
In the top of the eighth, with bases loaded and one out, junior
Efrain Correa, Jr. reached first on an error by the shortstop that allowed Long to score with Correa, Jr. picking up an RBI on the play. With the bases still loaded, senior
Brady Drawbaugh took a base on balls, allowing
Jayson Kramer to score to cut the deficit to 3-2.
In the bottom of the eighth Harris reached first on an error, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. Longwood decided to sac bunt again, bunting Harris in, increasing the lead to two runs, 4-2.
The Mountaineers staged a furious two-out rally in the top of the ninth to take the lead. With two outs and no one on base, senior
David Stirpe started what became the game winning rally with a single, bringing the lineup to the top of the order. Long found a hole to record a single, advancing Stripe to third. Next, Kramer found the gap and singled, batting Stirpe in while advancing Long to third making the score 4-3. Junior
Aiden Tierney came up to bat and singled, batting Long in to tie the score while advancing Tierney to third. Correa, Jr. carried the Mount's momentum into his at bat, singling home Kramer for the go-ahead run. Correa, Jr. then stole second to put runners on second and third, and Drawbaugh drew a walk to load the bases. Sophomore
Nick Fleming came through with a clutch two-run single for the Mountaineers, batting Tierney and
JT Landwehr (pinch runner for Correa, Jr.) in. The final run of the inning came Fleming was picked off, but while he was in a pickle between first and second, Drawbaugh was able to score before the out to make it 8-4. The Mount posted six runs on six hits in the inning.
The Lancers didn't fall easily as they managed to get the go-ahead run to the plate with two outs and bases loaded. Yet, freshman
Jeff Davis wasn't going to let the lead slide as he struck Luis DeLeon out swinging to end the game.
Sophomore pitcher
Jason Rivera recorded his first win of the season, while freshman
Jeff Davis recorded his first career save as a Mountaineer.

th, at 1 p.m.
