Emmitsburg, Md. (February 17, 2023) – The Mountaineers win the first of three on the road in Farmville, Virginia versus the Longwood Lancers. The final to tonight's game was 13-9, much credit being given to their run in the sixth inning. Leadoff hitter
Tyler Long had a great day offensively as he finished 3-3 with two walks, two doubles, an RBI, while scoring twice. Today marks the first season opening win since 2019.
The game started off slow for the Mount, scoring their first two runs in the fourth. Junior
Shane Wockley came to the plate with bases loaded and batted in those two in runs with a single to right field. By the sixth inning the score was 5-2 in favor of the Lancers.
In the top of the sixth, the Mountaineers flipped their caps and went to work, scoring six runs on five hits, rallying three of those runs with two outs. Junior
Thomas Latham doubled in two runs, junior Aidan Tierney doubled in a run, and junior Tyler long doubled in a run. Tierney scored on a wild pitch, that being the sixth and last run of a monstrous sixth inning for the Mountaineers.
The Lancers go into the bottom of the sixth down 8-5. Back-to-back homers put a wrench in the Mountaineers' momentum as they rally 8-8. After six the game was tied, the Mount had eight runs on nine hits with two errors (8-9-2), while the Lancers had eight runs on seven hits and one error (8-7-1).
The Mountaineers score one in the seventh by a combination of Latham and Wockley outs that advanced senior
Jayson Kramer to third, then scoring off a wild pitch. The Mount went into the eighth up 9-8. In the top of the eighth, with bases loaded, Latham grounds out to third not before batting in Tierney to go up 10-8.
The Lancers bring the game within one in the bottom of the eighth as Dix doubled a run in, the game 10-9 headed into the ninth.
The Mount scored three show-stopping runs to go up four headed into the bottom of the ninth. Senior
David Stirpe leads off the inning with a single and stole second, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Long, already impressive today, gets a base on balls and steals second, putting the Mount's runners in scoring position with no outs. Junior
Scott Seeker sacrifice flies out to left field, allowing Stirpe to score. Junior Efrain Correa Jr. doubled to right, batting Long in from third. Senior
Brady Drawbaugh hits a single, batting Correa in, the score 13-9. Freshman pitcher
JB Manarchuck grabbed his first win as a Mountaineer while freshman
Jett Slepak records his first save as a Mountaineer, finishing out the final three innings.
