EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 16, 2023) – In front of an energetic crowd at Knott Arena, Mount St. Mary's women's basketball had difficulties finding the bottom of the net. Quinnipiac on the other hand, shot 49 percent for the game to defeat the Mount 75-55 Thursday.
Going 21-for-71 from the field, Mount St. Mary's finished shooting 29.6 percent, with the N.C. State and Virginia Tech games serving as contests with a smaller number. On the year, the Mount fell to 10-14 (6-9 MAAC).
The team received a gritty effort from
Isabella Hunt, who had a season high 13 points along with eight rebounds.
Jessica Tomasetti found space to tie for a game-high 10 rebounds, which also matched a career high. Trying to find a solution on offense, every Mountaineer on the floor took a shot and made at least one bucket. A late game highlight occurred when redshirt freshman
Jaedyn Jamison drove in for a layup marking her first field goal of the season. The Rocky Mount, Virginia native finished with the two points, three rebounds and an assist.
Quinnipiac distributed a well-balanced effort, led by Jackie Grisdale's 13 points. Grace LeBarge and Mikayla Morris also reached double figures. The Bobcats won their third in a row to improve to 18-7 (13-3 MAAC) this season.
The Mountaineers got on the board first with a
Jo Raflo lineup. After a period of staunch defense from the Mount that kept the Bobcats off the board, the tables flipped, and Quinnipiac limited the home side while going on a 7-0 run up to the media timeout. The stretch continued for the Connecticut squad up to 12-2, picking up the pace to pull away until
Jasmine Lindsay-Huskey broke the cold snap with a three at the 1:20 mark. Despite shooting 3-for-22 in the period, defense limited the other side to trail 13-7 after one.
Offenses began to click in the second quarter for both sides. The up-tempo pace continued, favoring the Bobcats, who forced two timeouts in the space of a minute. By the 3:30 point before half, Quinnipiac held a 32-16 advantage. Mount worked to cut into the lead – a late
Michaela Harrison bucket pulled the contest a bit closer, 36-23.
A 1-for-7 start shooting in the third quarter, plus a 11-point beginning from the Bobcats, sealed the Mountaineers' fate. The floor opened up in the fourth, with the teams combining for 48 points. Mount had 27, led by Tomasetti with seven. Freshmen
Carissa Dunham and
McKenzie Matheny came within two points of their career highs with buckets down the stretch, finishing with a respective eight and five.
Mount St. Mary's remains home to face Iona Saturday (Feb. 18). Tip-off is 1 p.m. from Knott Arena.
